The Spritz was born in Veneto in the 1800s, when the region was part of the Austrian Empire. Austrian soldiers found the local wines too strong and asked to "spritzen", to add a splash of water. Later bitter liqueurs and Prosecco joined, and the orange Spritz became the symbol of the Italian aperitivo, the early-evening drink with friends.
